My IVF Cost – the pre-appointment tests

So at last, things were starting to happen. We had our first appointment regarding our IVF at the Kaali Inst. IVF Centre for the 26th October 2009 and had received a list of tests that needed doing before we attended.

The list of tests is:

Test required for IVF-ICSI treatment:
FSH, LH, estradiol, PRL, TSH hormone levels day 2-4 of menstrual cycle
Papanicolau smear (from within 1 year accepted)
 Rubella screening
 Cervical culture for Chlamydia
Complete blood count, liver function tests, sodium, potassium, Creatinine, Electrocardiogram
HIV, hepatitis B and C screen (for both partners)
 Semen analysis
Uterine cavity evaluation (HSG, saline sonohysterogram, hysteroscopy)

We live in the UK and we went to our own GP not knowing whether or not we would have to pay for the tests. Our GP was great, and in fact we ended up getting all of the tests done with no cost. At one point it did look as though I was going to have to pay for a smear as the last one I had done was over 12 months ago but less than the 3 years that they will test for at no cost on the NHS. However, trying to keep the IVF cost down, I asked Dr. Peter Kovacs if they could do the test in Hungary and he said that if my smear test was normal in 2007 and according to local regulations it does not need to be repeated till 2010 then I will not need a fresh test.

I must admit that I do not really understand what all the tests are, but what we needed to do / part with in order to get all the results required was the following:

MYSELF: In one appointment with the nurse she took 4 tubes of blood and did and electrocardiogram (ECG) which involved putting pads on various parts of my body and wiring me up to a machine – I think it just tests that the heart is functioning properly and is totally painless. I also had to give a cervical culture for Chlamydia – just a scrap from the wall, nowhere near as bad as a smear!

DEAR HUBBY: Poor, poor hubby, he absolutely hates needles and he had to give 2 tubes of blood – he survived though! On top of this he also had to take a semen sample to our local hospital.

The only thing that I don’t think this covered was the final test, uterine cavity evaluation (HSG, saline sonohysterogram, hysteroscopy). I had many tests done about three years ago and my GP said that this would be covered in the notes from them. Some of the tests that I had done back then were not very nice, but I don’t know what they were called I’m afraid! It’s the one where they put a dye through you that was really a little unpleasant, all the rest were quite bearable.

At this point the IVF cost is zero – what a bargain!

So, a week later we had the results in hand and were all prepared for our first appointment. Nervous? Definitely!

IVF Cost so far £0

My IVF Cost – Choosing a Clinic

Can you believe it, at last we have actually taken the leap of faith and made our decision! This was actually a very hard part of the process, to say enough is enough, we have gathered as much information as is reasonable, and now we have to make a choice and get things moving.

So where have we chosen I hear you ask? Well, we are going to the Kaali Inst. IVF Centre in Hungary.

What made us choose this centre. Well there were a number of factors. I had some great clinics on my shortlist and a number of the doctors had been truely fantastic at answering questions both from myself and others of you who also wanted some answers. I was feeling very pulled toward three places in particular:

The Nairobi IVF Centre in Kenya – Mr. Olegs Tucs has been brilliant at answering questions and on top of this we love Africa!

The New Hope Fertility Centre in Mexico – Dr Alejandro Chavez-Badiola has also been excellent at answering questions, and the idea of less medication with the mini IVF was incredibly appealing to me – I hate medications!

The Kaali Inst. IVF Centre in Hungary – Dr. Peter Kovacs was actually the first person I ever contacted about IVF, long before I ever even considered starting this site. His response was very good and answered all of my questions without having the structure of questioning that I later developed for other clinics. My husband and I went to Hungary for the first time a few years ago and absolutely fell in love with it. On top of all this Hungary is only a 2.5 hour flight away from us in the UK.

To be honest, I think what swung it the most for us was the convenience of Hungary to us. It was difficult to choose between the clinics, they all seemed to satisfy us , however the cost of the long haul flights was significantly adding to the overall cost of the treatment. The price of the treatment in Hungary was very reasonable and so it made total sense to choose the Kaali Inst. IVF Centre – first consultation appointment made for the 26th October 2009!

IVF Cost at Centro Fecundar Costa Rica (Insemination & GIFT) / Panamá (IVF & ICSI)

After a recommendation from one of my readers (thank you Maureen) I sent my letter to the Centro Fecundar in Panama requesting the IVF cost, IVF success rates and IVF procedure. It turns out that the Centro Fecundar has a clinic based in Panama for IVF and ICSI, and another in Costa Rica which specialises in insemination and GIFT.

I received a quick response, which seemed promising, from the doctor whilst on the move, and a promise of a more details response later. Here is the first response:

Dear sue
You can review our information in our website www.centrofecundar.com
The majorities of question you will have the answer making click in in vitro Panama on our main page.
I will answer your question as soon I have time to do it
Best regards
Dr. Ariel Perez.

Unfortunately the follow up reply was not as thorough as I had expected:

Dear Sue
At 44 years old you are candidate to egg donors, because the energy of your own eggs (mithocondrias) are to old to get pregnant, success rate under 20%, if your want to perform it with us please let me know to send you our egg donor file (success rate with egg donor is 65%).

IVF Cost at Centro de Reprodução Humana Prof. Franco Junior, Brazil

After sending my letter to the Centro de Reprodução Humana Prof. Franco Junior in Brazil the reply I received seemed to be much more focussed on collecting the money than on answering my questions – in fact I have been given all their banking details to deposit money in for a consultation but not even told how much the IVF procedure will cost me. I don’t think I would be going here!!

Here is the response and attachment that they sent:

Dear Sue,

IVF Cost at Genisis, Greece

Here is the response to my letter requesting the IVF cost, IVF success rates and IVF procedure at Genisis in Athens, Greece.

thank you for your e-mail.
The pregnancy rate is about 50% at the age up to 40 and after 40 goes to 25%.
We performed  over 3100 oocyte pickups last year and the maximum age we treated here is 50 (by law).
Of course  those women arranged donor eggs.  The fertility condition will not treated are few,  women over the age of 50 of women one reason or another have the endometrium destroyed.  Of course these women still use surrogacy.  We place 3 embryos  maximum at the time untill age of 40,  and over 40 we place 4 embryos.
The basic cost of IVF depends treatment 3-4000 euro with no adittional cost, if the cycle is abanded there are only just some expences.  You will need to be here in Greece about a week – 10 days,  if you are able to do ultrasounds at the UK. For logistics and flight accomondation will  contact at our clinic at +302106894326 with Mrs Anastasia.
Your treatment will be and by e-mail and monitor can may be done at the UK or here in Greece.  Of course, careful monitory should be done avoid hyperstimulation.  The clinic is inside the Hospital “Genesis Athens” which is registered in the minister of Health.
There is no waiting list for IVF,  whenever you decide.

——————————Overseas Patient Coordinator
Life Clinic – Athens
Greece

Tel: 0030 210 00 631

I have answered the questions you presented as fully as possible. For more detailed information please see our website www.lifeclinic.gr or contact the clinic directly on (0030) 210 00 631.

Just to correct you that our clinic is based in Athens, Greece and not in Turkey as you wrote on your email.

Life Clinic is a newly established IVF clinic in Greece. In Life clinic, in contrast with other traditional clinics in this field, we try see and treat infertility not only by producing and transferring embryos but also by trying to find and correct underlying problems that may stop a woman from becoming pregnant.

Our clinical director, Dr Dimitri Papanikolaou, worked until 2 years ago as deputy clinical director in the UK’s most successful IVF clinic in London (ARGC), returning to Greece to establish a clinic in Athens using the same proven fertility techniques.

Having worked with the pioneers in immune related infertility problems, we have a vast experience in unexplained infertility and we offer comprehensive investigation and management in this field.

· What is the current success rate for your clinic? (preferably by age as I know that the success rate will be much lower for somebody of my age)

Our overall clinical success rates for live birth are:

Under 35yrs: 51%.

35-39yrs: 39%

40-42yrs: 18%

43-44yrs: 7%

At Life Clinic we prefer to individualise the success rate for each patient in order to be as honest as possible with our patients. Success rates for IVF vary and are dependent on many factors such as the woman’s age, cause of infertility and presence of additional factors.

· How many cycles do you perform per year at the clinic?

On 2008 we had 152 cycles.

· What is the maximum age that you treat?

We are restricted by Greek regulations to a maximum of 50 years of age.

· Are there any fertility conditions that you will not treat?

All fertility conditions are treated at Life Clinic with the exception of HIV positive patients. This includes egg and sperm donations and reproductive immunological treatment.

· What is your embryo transfer policy? How many embryos will you replace at one time?

Up to 4 embryos can be transferred for women under 40 years of age and 3 embryos for over 40 years of age.

· What is the cost of IVF treatment?

The cost of an IVF cycle is 2.900 EUR. This includes initial and follow-up consultations, ultrasound scans, theatre charges, anaesthetic charges and doctor’s fees. All our prices are listed on our website at www.lifeclinic.gr

There are additional costs for medications and any blood tests that are required. Medication costs vary for each patient (depending mainly on the woman’s age and how easy she responds to stimulation), which is usually between 1.000 – 2.000+ EUR. Costs for blood tests during the stimulation are less than 400 EUR.

· What happens to the costs if the cycle has to be abandoned?

If in the unlikely event that a cycle needs to be cancelled prior to the egg collection, minimal charges are incurred. These will be the costs of the cycle up to the point of cancelling  (i.e. blood tests) and a small medical fee.

· How long would I need to be in Greece for?

This depends on the individual patient’s preferences especially for overseas patients.

We prefer two visits in Athens, one for the initial consultation and check up in order to plan the treatment and one for the actual treatment.

However, most overseas patients prefer to have the first consultation over the telephone and to monitor the progress of their treatment in the earlier stages locally (with blood tests and ultrasound scans) which is then followed by a visit to the clinic in Athens for the embryo transfer.

We prefer patients to arrive a few days prior to embryo transfer in order to be sure that everything runs smoothly with their treatment and to stay at least 1 day post the procedure.

· Who deals with the logistics of flights and accommodation?

We provide all the information needed on flights and accommodation in Athens.  If preferred, an agent can arrange everything for you at very competitive prices. Usually, however, patients prefer to arrange this themselves.

· How is the pre-treatment carried out?

The best way is for this to be conducted in our clinic in Athens. However, for overseas patients this can be done at local clinics or through their GP locally with instructions from Life Clinic.

· How do I get medication?

You can buy them from every pharmacy in Athens or we can arrange to send you a prescription so you can get them locally. In the UK, GP’ s are sometimes very helpful with this.

· How will I be monitored?

During the stimulation, regular vaginal ultrasound scans and daily blood tests are required.

For overseas patients who prefer to arrive in Athens for the later stages of the treatment only, i.e. the embryo transfer, must find a clinic locally in which to have these blood tests and ensure that blood test results are forwarded on to us the same day. The doctor uses this information to determine the patient’s response to treatment and if required adjust the daily dosage of medications in order to maximise the patient’s chances of success.

· How will I know that I am not being under / over stimulated?

The close monitoring we suggest and support is the best way to avoid the above situations.

All patients are monitored closely enough through their treatment with ultrasound scans and daily blood tests.

· If I have a problem whilst in the UK who would I go to?

Patients would contact their doctor at Life Clinic (we are on-call 24 hrs). In addition, we maintain links with private IVF clinics in Europe (including London), so in the unlikely event that the patient requires immediate treatment/procedures externally to Life Clinic then these clinics would be consulted.

· Is the clinic registered with any regulatory body?

Life Clinic is under the regulation of the Greek national authorities including the General Medical Council and the Hellenic Authority of Assisted Reproduction (equivalent to HFEA in the UK).

· How long is the waiting list for IVF treatment?

Our current waiting time for consultation is less than a month. For IVF treatment cycles there is no waiting list.

IVF Cost at Centro de Reprodução Humana de Campinas, Brazil – great information

Many years ago (or should I say decades – ugh, sometimes these things make you realise how old you are getting!) I visited Brazil and thoroughly enjoyed it. So here I have gathered some information on the IVF cost, IVF success rate and IVF procedure from the Centro de Reprodução Humana de Campinas in Brazil. The response to my IVF cost letter is shown below.

Thank you very much for your message. Your questions are very important for us. I am glad to answer all of them and feel comfortable to ask for more ones if you want to. I am pleased to give you the authorization to insert in your blog this information.

The answers for your questions are below:

1. What is the current success rate for your clinic? (preferably by age as I know that the success rate will be much lower for somebody of my age)

The mean pregnancy rate for all ages in 2008 was 53%/transfer. Above 30 years goes to 60%, over 40 years                 drops to 22%.
2. How many cycles do you perform per year at the clinic?
Over 300 cycles. Not counting transfers of defrosted embryos.
3. What is the maximum age that you treat?
We do not have a maximum. The limits are ovarian reserve or use of donated oocytes.
4. Are there any fertility conditions that you will not treat?
No.
5. What is your embryo transfer policy? How many embryos will you replace at one time?
We follow Brazilian policy were it is stated that we are not allowed to transfer more than four embryos. But our preference is to transfer no more than two embryos. Between this number the couple has the right to give the final decision in number of embryos.
6. What is the basic cost of the IVF treatment?
Actual cost of an IVF cycle is R$ 8.000,00 (Brazilian currency) + medicines (approximately US$ 4,000.00). Think as 1US$ = R$ 2,40 (always changing). The price for R$ 8.000,00 includes ultrasound, IVF lab, aesthesis and embryo transfer.
7. What additional costs would / could be incurred?
We charge for embryo freezing R$ 1.000,00 a tax for embryo storage (about US$ 500.00). Every couple needs to have a set of laboratory exams (HIV, type B hepatitis, etc) at a cost of R$ 400,00 each partner (about US$ 200.00).
8. What happens to the costs if the cycle has to be abandoned?
Half of the R$ 8.000,00 will be returned to the patient.
9. How long would I need to be in Brazil for?
Beginning the preparation abroad, woman will have to stay in Brazil for 14 – 21 days. Their husband will need to stay only a few days (oocyte aspiration day).
10. Who deals with the logistics of flights and accommodation?
I have in my office an assistant, her name is Vilma Zotareli, she is fluent in English and she can help you out with any travel arrangement. We also have a travel agency which can make all the necessary arragements flight, ground transportation and accomodation.
11. How is the pre-treatment carried out?
Couple needs to bring the exams from abroad or collect them at our clinic. Will start using contraceptive pill for at list 10 days before arriving at our clinic. They will star medication immediately this day.
12. How do I get medication?
All medications are offered by our clinic. But patients are free to get them somewhere else (distributors).
13. How will I be monitored?
We monitor follicular development by ultrasound only.
14. How will I know that I am not being under / over stimulated?
Your control will be made buy ultrasound. According to this information we decide over the medication.
15. If I have a problem whilst in the UK who would I go to?
We will carry out any complication happened in Brazil.
16. Is the clinic registered with any regulatory body?
Yes, we take part of the RED LATINOAMERICANA DE REPRODUCCION ASSISTIDA, by ANVISA (Brazilian Government Agency) and Brazilian Federal Medicine Council (CFM).
17. How long is the waiting list for IVF treatment?
No wait at all.

Please let me know if you need any further information.
Sincerely yours,

Acupuncture IVF And Fertility Clinic Australia

I contacted the Acupuncture IVF and Fertility Clinic in Australia to find out their IVF cost and how the acupuntue fits in with the IVF procedure. I received a reply stating that they do not actually perform IVF but help couples who have failed using IVF to fall pregnant naturally. Here is the response that I got – interesting, I’ve used acupunture before for arthritis in my shoulder caused by breaking my shoulder when I was young, the results were incedibly impressive, but you do have to make sure you have a very good practitioner, so this could be a real alternative.

You have asked me if I perform IVF. I do not. I am a Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture doctor specialising in fertility. I have an 87% success rate http://www.ivfacupuncture.com.au/statistics.html. Most couples trying IVF, ICSI, IUI do not need these proceedures. I have helped couples who have failed these proceedures countless times to fall pregnant naturally. Please see attached news articles.

IVF Cost at Fertility Argentina – great information

I have received some great information from Fertility Argentina on their IVF cost, IVF success rates and IVF procedure, they have also included information on their egg donor program.

Here is the reply to my IVF cost letter:

Dear Sue,

I will try to answer all your questions in green (after each question).

First of all, it is important to understand that success rate using your own eggs (at your 44 age) is really low. I have attached a graphic where you can see the success rate using own and donor eggs. Therefore, the main indication for you is using donor eggs. Nevertheless, there are some patients who decide doing an IVF using there own eggs (I can do both treatments, but I want to be sure that you understand your real chances of having a baby in each case).

I will tell you something about our egg donor program. I coordinate a huge Egg Donor Program in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Last year, more than 400 women/couples received donated oocytes, and almost half of them got pregnant (clinical pregnancy rate: 45-50%). About 10-15% of those couples come from abroad, and the coordination with them is not a problem.

We have a program based on sharing donated oocytes. It means that one donor donate her oocyte cohort to several recipients. Each recipient gets at least four mature oocytes (MII oocytes). We do ICSI to all of them. Sharing the oocytes this way, let us reducing costs and shortening waiting time, still having good pregnancy rates.

Egg donation is anonymous. However, we will try to match the donor with you as much as possible. Donors are medically screened very deeply (see www.fertilityargentina.com/services.html). Since you decide to enter the Program, in the following 2-3 months you will be here for the embryo transfer.

Total costs are the following:

  • First office visit: U$D 300 (American dollars)
  • Egg donor cycle: U$D 4,600 (American dollars)
  • Embryo freezing (only when having good quality embryos): U$D 400 (American dollars)

Donor’s medication is included. Recipient’s medication is not included (but it is not expensive).

I will try to answer all your questions for both IVF and egg donor cycles..

I am looking to have IVF treatment due to a failure to become pregnant after over ten years. After all the tests the doctors in the UK say that this is “unexplained” and IVF is the way forward given my age – I am 44.

I would be grateful if you could give me some information on your clinic, both for my own use and so that I can also pass it on to others in a similar situation to myself through my IVF blog (www.ivfcost.net). I would be delighted if you can pass this information to other people in your blog. You can read more about us at www.FertilityArgentina.com

The questions I have regarding treatment at your clinic are:

  1. What is the current success rate for your clinic? (preferably by age as I know that the success rate will be much lower for somebody of my age). It is about 45% at 30 years old, 35-40% at 35 years old, 20% at 40 years old, <10% at 42 years old and <5% at 44 years old. Using donor eggs, the clinical pregnancy rate is about 45-50% at every age)
  2. How many cycles do you perform per year at the clinic? More than 1,200
  3. What is the maximum age that you treat? Using own eggs, it is 45 years old. Using donor eggs, 50 years old.
  4. Are there any fertility conditions that you will not treat? No. In fact, we do some treatments that are not performed everywhere (i.e. IMSI and annexin columns for severly abnormal morpholoy sperm). I do treatments to women with no partner too (using donor sperm).
  5. What is your embryo transfer policy? How many embryos will you replace at one time?  Using own eggs, 2 or 3 embryos, depending on the woman´s age and other clinical characteristics. Using donor eggs, only 2 embryos (we follow the ASRM guidelines)
  6. What is the basic cost of the IVF treatment? Using own eggs: USD 4,000 (American dollars). Patients medication is not included.     //      Using donor eggs: USD 4,600 (American dollars). In this case, the donor´s medication is already included.
  7. What additional costs would / could be incurred? First office visit: USD 300. In case that you use donor sperm: USD 400. In case that you have good quality embryos that were not transferred, freezing embryos cost is: USD 400. Accommodations and plane tickets are not included.
  8. What happens to the costs if the cycle has to be abandoned? If the cycle is abandoned before the egg retrieval, you have no costs. You will pay once you are here, when I see that the egg retrieval is going to be performed.   //  In case of egg donation, we guarantee that you will receive at least 4 mature eggs and that you will have 2 embryos for the transfer.
  9. How long would I need to be in Buenos Aires for? In case of IVF with own eggs: 10-12 days, if you start the ovarian stimulation at your place. If you want to buy the medication here (where is cheaper), you should stay 15-18 days.   //  In case of egg donation, at least 7 days.
  10. Who deals with the logistics of flights and accommodation? You should deal with flights. I can give you some contacts (a personal concierge) to help you with accommodations (hotel or an apartment). If you want us to deal with flights, please, let me know (I would talk to the personal concierge)
  11. How is the pre-treatment carried out? IVF with own eggs: a) You send me the screening tests. b) I give you a schedule. c) You start your medication there and come to Argentina in the middle of your ovarian stimulation; or you can start the medication here.   // Egg donation: a) You send me the screening tests. b) I give you a schedule. c) You start preparing your endometrium at your place and you come to Argentina once your endometrium is ready.  //  In both cases, I can send you some prescriptions for the tests and medications, and you can buy the medication through an international pharmacy (like IVFMeds.com)
  12. How do I get medication? You can buy it at a local pharmacy using a presciption of your doctor, or you can buy in an international pharmacy (using my prescriptions).
  13. How will I be monitored? At the beginning of the cycle, you will be monitored  at your place (you should send me the ultrasound and bloodwork results by e-mail in order to receive more instructions on how to go on). At the end of the cycle, I will do it here.
  14. How will I know that I am not being under / over stimulated?  I will tell you that (we will be in touch as much as you need)
  15. If I have a problem whilst in the UK who would I go to? You should be in touch with your doctor. Problems when doing IVF are more frequent at the end of the cycle (when you are here)
  16. Is the clinic registered with any regulatory body? Yes, it has ISO 9001, and it is registered by SAMER (the Argentine Society of Reproductive Medicine) and RED LARA (the Latin American Registry)

I hope I could answer all your questions. Please, let me know your thoughts.

Infertility Support Center
Georgia is the best surrogacy and egg donor destination as it is legal since 1997 and intended parents can register the baby in a day. We have many years of experience and have well educated donors with high IQ level and nice appearance.

We provide all these services and treatments for the lowest prices in the world. Georgia is a beautiful country with great infrastructure. There is a possibility to meet donors and surrogates personally.

Egg Donors
Our egg donors have been carefully selected and screened to ensure a good clear background and family history of genetic diseases, reproductive health and psychological stability.

Donors are healthy non-smoking women between the ages of 21 and 35, many of whom have delivered before. Potential donors are required to have an initial interview with the patient coordinator and then a comprehensive gynecological exam with our physicians.

Sperm Donors
Sperm donors are screened for genetic diseases, given a semen analysis and interviewed about their lifestyles, alcohol or drug usage and number of sexual partners.

You can come to our clinics for surrogates or donors OR you have a choice of inviting prepared surrogates and donors to your country based on your specific needs.

Online Donors Database
You have access to an online database to review and research donors and surrogates profiles and photographs before making an informed decision.

Surrogate Mothers
We require that our surrogates be in a healthy and physically fit condition, over 18 years of age, genetically screened, non-smoking (includes passive smoking) and of a sound mind.

Georgia’s Fertility Treatment Laws
Egg donation, sperm donation and surrogacy has been legal in Georgia since 1997. Surrogate mothers have no parental rights over babies they give birth to for the purpose of gestational surrogacy. The couple or the single mother is the legal parent of the child born from a surrogate mother.

No consent from the surrogate is required. Even if an embryo was donated, the surrogate mother or donor has no parental rights over the child. The child’s birth certificate will be issued immediately after birth and the couple or single mother will be registered as the child’s parent on the birth certificate, not the surrogate.

Our Team
Our team of fertility specialists, scientists, nurses and counsellors in local fertility clinics provide you with high success rates & excellence in fertility care. You achieve high success rates through access to the latest scientific developments in assisted reproductive technology.

Fertility Treatments
Many couples faced with infertility are still unable to become pregnant after first line therapy such as ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination, or reproductive surgery. For these couples, the logical next step is to explore the Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART).

These treatments include In Vitro Fertilization and other assisted laboratory techniques designed to improve fertilization. The medical team at Georgia Reproductive Specialists is dedicated to developing the most successful ART treatment plan for each patient. Compared to simpler treatments, ART procedures typically have very high success rates but are more complex as they involve well-coordinated, perfectly timed effort between the medical team, laboratory staff and the patient.

Success rate for embryo implantation process has been scientifically proven to be approx. 30%. We pride ourselves in providing honest and industry leading technologies and solutions to you.

We offer a discreet and comfortable setting where the most innovative fertility treatments are offered. Our treatments include:

  • Surrogacy
