IVF Cost at the Nairobi IVF Centre, Kenya – great information!

The following reply to my letter requesting information on IVF cost, IVF success rates and the IVF procedure was received from Nairobi IVF Centre in Kenya the day after I made the request.

This is a great response, Mr Olegs Tucs has answered all of my questions directly – I have added the approximate US$ values in red, he had already converted them to Euros for me. The success rates for my age group appear very good, although as I have mentioned elsewhere on this blog it is very difficult to compare there.

Overall I think this is a great response and  Mr Tucs will certainly be going on my shortlist. The full contact details for the clinic are:

If you check out the website there is a full list of costs, their current success rates and a very useful dictionary of infertility for people like myself who are not too well clued up on all of the jargon! I have contacted Mr. Olegs Tucs on a number of occassions and he is VERY approachable and willing to answer all questions.

Here’s Mr. Olegs Tucs reply:

Thank You a lot for the interest in our services.
Please see answers below:

> What is the current success rate for your clinic? (preferably by age as I know that the success rate will be much lower for somebody of my age)

Success rate for the first 6 months of 2008 is 41% of clinical pregnancies per cycle started. For the age group over 40 we have much lower success rate of 23 %, for egg donation programm the overall success rate is 56 %. Now we are going to publish our results in East Africa Medical Journal, so hopefully in short time the most detailed information will be available.

> How many cycles do you perform per year at the clinic?

An average of 140 IVF/ICSI cycles per year

> What is the maximum age that you treat?

We do not have an age limit for IVF with donor eggs, in case of own eggs we do not do the treatment if FSH level on menstrual cycle Day 2-3 is higher than 17 mUI/ml. So we actually do not look at the age but at ovarian reserve as such.

> Are there any fertility conditions that you will not treat?

We are unable to do sex selection and PGD. Otherwise we try to find suitable solution for every case.

> What is your embryo transfer policy? How many embryos will you replace at one time?

We prefer to transfer no more than 2 embryos, but final decision is base on embryo quality and patients medical history.

> What is the basic cost of the IVF treatment?

The basic cost is KSHS 300,000 (appr. EUR 3000) (approx. US$4,100) incl. medications.

> What additional costs would / could be incurred?

ICSI (microinjection) if necessary – 20,000 KSHS (EUR 200) (approx. US$275), first consultation KSHS 2000 (approx. US$28), sperm analysis if not done elsewhere in 6 months before the treatment, KSHS 2000 (approx US$28). Health screen and hormonal profiling if not done elsewhere in 6 months before the treatment, KSHS 30,000. (approx. US$410) I can provide more information what tests are necessary if You need so.

> What happens to the costs if the cycle has to be abandoned?

In such a case You have to pay only for what have been done. Price breakdown will be given in details. If the first cycle fails we offer second attempt at KSHS 250,000. (approx. US$3,430)

> How long would I need to be in Kenya for?

Ideally for the whole duration of treatment – it is ca. 3 weeks if You have a regular cycle. You can also do ovarian stimulation locally under supervision of local specialist and come for actual procedure only. Stay time will not exceed one week then and You will have to pay about half-price- that is laboratory expences.

> Who deals with the logistics of flights and accommodation?

We can arrange both flight and accommodation incl. airport transfer if necessary. Or we may give You hotel details and You can arrange the accommodation on Your own.

> How is the pre-treatment carried out?

First we need some information about Your medical history, please see the application form attached. Based on information we have the treatment schedule will be set up.

> How do I get medication?

Normally You will get medications on Your first visit to us. Alternatively we can give You the list of medications necessary so You can get those at Your location.

> How will I be monitored?

Several ( at least 2) ultrasound check ups are necessary during stimulation and we do it locally at the Clinic.

> How will I know that I am not being under / over stimulated?

On the first scan ovarian response is determined as number and size of follicles growing and we will follow You up every two days to keep the stimulation under control.

> If I have a problem whilst in the UK who would I go to?

It depends where in UK You live. We have specialists in London, but elsewhere You may need to find out who is experienced IVF specialist in Your area.

> Is the clinic registered with any regulatory body?

So far there are no appropriate regulatory bodies for IVF in Kenya so we are registered as private gynecological clinic at the medical board.

Hope I have provided at least some information You need and You are welcome to ask more questions if by chance something is missing. In Your case FSH blood level is the most important criteria for us to decide if we can do IVF.

Kind regards,
MD Mr. Olegs Tucs

To help others in a similar situation the response to Barbara from Dr. Olegs Tucs was:

    Dear Barbara,
In given situation if cycle is regular and one fallopian tube is open
and husbands sperm is normal, the affordable option may be an IUI
(intrauterine insemination) with light hormonal support.
This means we may give You low dose of FSH, the hormone that will
stimulate growth of several eggs instead of one You have ready every
    month.
Than we will also need to have ultrasound check ups to be sure eggs
are growing in that ovary, which is connected to one fallopian tube.
Because if eggs grow in the ovary connected with closed tube,
spermatozoa will not get there to fertilize.
So when we will see eggs (follicles actually) growing in the right
ovary we can do the procedure.

My 27 year-old helper has been married several years with no baby. She suffered an ectopic pregnancy and has undergone several operations after establishing a blockage of all her tubes. The operation failed. Would it be possible to help such a case? She is desperate for a child and has no money. She currently endures really cruel treatment from relatives as a result. Please help

Kindly let me know if I can get a sperm donor. I am 0ver 35 with the ‘safe mothrhood’ window closing. I am not in a relationship and would wish to have a baby…no strings attached and without fear of HIV infection from a hurried relationship. I really need help

Hey, just went through my 1st IVF cycle which failed (at the Nairobi Hospital Fertility Centre) in April.

Would like to give it another shot. Do you do IVF for HIV+ woman with -ve husband?

  16. Comment by pat

Will IVF be needed in a discordant couple where the man is HIV+ and his sperm count normal, i.e. will it be possible for your clinic to do the sperm washing and then insemination? and what would be the costs

  17. Comment by admin

For all those that are interested Mr. Olegs Tucs reply to Pat’s question is:

“In this case it is possible to wash the sperm and do insemination. The
cost of the procedure is KSHS 20,000 (appr. USD 250 at current rate).”

    All the best,
    Sue

    Dear all,

After a number of enquiries regarding the possibility of IVF when the woman is HIV positive Mr. Olegs Tucs has informed me that:

“There are some news in this field. In fact we have finally established
separate equipment line for HIV+ patients and can now offer ICSI even
to HIV+ women. However as You may know pregnancy in combination with
HIV infection possesses great risk for mothers health and therefore we
are doing ICSI after careful medical examination of the patient.”

    All the best,
    Sue

We have not been able to be blessed with child and have been married since 1985. My wife has been done surgery twice for excision of left ovarian mass first in 1997, May and lately in February 2009, she was done tuboplasty but so far we have tried to concieve to no avail.
My sperm count has been done consistently and it was found to be normal. I am seeking to know whether we can go for artificial insemination or Ivf with their cost implication. I am 42 while my wife is 36 years.
    please keep me informed.
    Thank you.

I am 39 years old and have been trying to conceive with no success. Recently i was diagnosed with blocked tubes. What are my chances with IVF?

  23. Comment by Olegs Tucs

    Attn: Beatrice
Blocked tubes is very common case of infertility and the prognosis is usually good. The success rate for your age group at our clinic is 37% of clinical pregnancies per cycle started but it is worth to check your FSH before treatment to have an idea of ovarian reserve first.

I am 35 yrs HIV+ female, my partner is HIV- and would like to conceive. What procedure needs to be done and what is the cost? Thank you.

  25. Comment by ruth

my husband has low sperm count about 1.6 millions, what should we do?

  26. Comment by Olegs Tucs

    Attn: Wendy
Dear Wendy, in Your case the most important thing may be having HIV negative child. Therefore I would recommend ICSI procedure to avoid possibility of infection as much as possible. After ICSI and embryo transfer it is very high chance to have HIV negative child and you should avoid breastfeeding child after delivery to protect him/her from infection.

  27. Comment by Olegs Tucs

    Attn: Ruth
    Dear Ruth,
The first thing to do is to repeat the semen analysis as count may vary from time to time. If you have already repeated or it turns out to be the same after repeat, the most viable option with given sperm count is IVF with ICSI as 1,6 million is much lower than the normal value of 20 or more million necessary for normal fertilization.

  29. Comment by Eve J

Hi, im 29yrs. I tried to conceive in vain. I did an hsg that showed that one of the tubes is blocked and the other one is partially blocked due to possibly endometriosis. Is it possible for me to do an IUI instead of IVF. Is the partially blocked left tube possible of working? My scans were in January 2009. Does endometriosis spread with time. At the time my ovaries were OK. What can i do. My guys sperm count was also normal when checked. thank you in advance.

    Hi,
My name is Christine I have been to your centre twice for ICSI and Day 5 blastocyst transfer. I am 33 years old, 28 day cycle, normal uterus no blocked tubes checked through laparascopy.I have a 12 year old daughter i got when i was 20 years from a previous relationship. My husband is 31 years old with severe oligoasthenozoospermia. Our first IVF in June 2009 the beta was at 35 and was told it would fail and it did at around 6 weeks, the second one the beta levels were good and i was happy but 8 days later i started to bleed when i came over to the clinic an ultra sound confirmed i had lost the pregnancy. the first time i had 13 eggs and the second time i had 18 eggs retrieved. The first time i was put on cyclogest pessaries and suffered yeast infection the second time i was put on gestone injection at least i got a positive, although what i was looking for was a baby. i would like to try IVF again although i am now running out of resources. but first i would like that all possible causes of the pregnancy loss are eliminated. I am beginning to believe i am infertile and cannot carry a baby to term. what tests should be done on me to confirm the problem i have? can they be done at your clinic. i have had of autoimmune disorders, anti nuclear anti bodies and anti phosphoid anti bodies, thrombophilia etc. i have a positive VDRL yet i have been treated several times for syphillis i was finally told that i have syphillis anti bodies but not the syphillis itself, my husband has severe oligoasthnozoospermia and is HIV + I am HIV -. He is giving up on life and believes that he will die childless. i have read a bit about chromosomal abnormalities. I wish we could rule out the cause because the doc said it implanted after both trys but i still loose the pregnancies please help us. Is there anything that can be done for us to improve our chances?

Hello,Im delighted to see your website and particlarly about the fertility treatment. Now my case is clear.I have a low sperm count. My doctor has tested me and my wife but the problem is mine.He has told me i have 44 million sperms and they are 65% ok with regard to other features.Given im 32 and my wife 31 ifear i might never get a child. Moreover, could i be wasting time for my wife? The IVF treatment is somehow beyond my reach,i may not at once raise 300000 but with elaborate arrangements,i can raise within some time.So please advise me on if i can seek your treatment with little amount then i pay as time goes by.My doc had mentioned if all else fails we could go that route. Please advise>im dissilusioned beyond measure.

Hi, am 34 yrs old, started trying for a baby in Nov last year, was discovered to have fibroids in March 09, in June 09 discovered that my tubes are blocked ..had surgery in Aug09 to unblock tubesa nd it was discovered that TB had infected my tubes and thus had caused blockage and since they were irreparable they were removed. Was shocked at the turn of events!! I have never had any symptoms of TB eg coughing, loss of weight….etcBut ave now been on TB medication now since Sep to end March 2010. Is there hopw for me to still give birth by IVF?? What is the procudure for me??
    SWM

  41. Comment by Olegs Tucs

    Dear SWM,
TB can have multiple locations, not only lungs and the infection may be silent as a result You may have not had symptoms. But after treatment for TB it is generally no contraindications for IVF. In fact IVF is the only treatment possible as tubes are removed.
Therefore You certainly can go on and try IVF with the success rate comparable or slightly lower than without TB. You should start the preparation not earlier than You will have finished TB treatment.

    Hi Everybody,

I had a question from a reader about donor eggs and I thought I would share the answer that Mr. Olegs Tucs kindly gave for the Nairobi IVF Centre:

“We do have an egg donor program running and currently we are able to offer a choice of 205 egg donors most of them have donated eggs at least once and all are tested negative for HIV, Hepatitis B, C, syphilis and have no family history of hereditary diseases.
We do not have a waiting list so after You choose the donor we are able to have IVF cycle completed in 2 months time. the full cost of the procedure is KSHS 390,000 incl medicines plus KSHS 2,000 as first visit fee.”

I hope this is of help to some of you.

    All the best,
    Sue

  46. Comment by Olegs Tucs

    Dear Mr Dominic,
The most applicable technique in Your case may be IVF procedure combined with microinjection technique (ICSI) and use of substance called hialuronic acid. The idea is to purify good quality spermatozoa by allowing them to bind to the hialuronic acid, then pick individual spermatozoa and inject those into eggs. If You are in Nairobi, I would advice You to come to our clinic to have the repeat sperm test before we make a decision on the best way forward.
