IVF Cost at TMC Fertility Centre, Malaysia

Below is the response that I received to my letter about the IVF cost, IVF success rate and IVF process at the TMC Fertility Centre in Malaysia. A very quick response – received the same day that I emailed the letter to them.

I have added in the currency conversions to US$ in red. The web address for the clinic is http://www.tmcfertility.com/:

The following info is useful for overseas/outstation patients wishing to undergo IVF :-

 1.   Ideal timing of visit to Malaysia

As far as possible we should see the couple on the second or third day of the cycle (the first day of the cycle is the first day of a proper period).  During this visit, the couple undergoes a full assessment and subsequently commencement of treatment.  The husband would also need to undergo a semen analysis for which he should abstain between 3 – 5 days prior.

 2.   IVF/ICSI treatment cycle

Treatment involves a series of daily injections for between 10 – 12 days and clinic visits.  You will need to be seen every 3 to 5 days until egg collection and subsequently embryo transfer 2 days later.  If you need PGS/PGD, this will be done 3 – 5 days (blastocyst) after egg collection.  Excess embryos if available will be frozen.

The entire treatment takes about 16 days (IVF / ICSI only) or 20 days (IVF + PGS).  If you need PGS/PGD, you should be seen at the Kuala Lumpur centre.

 3.   Hospital Facilities

Our hospital offers comprehensive fertility care management.  All fertility procedures are performed as day case, ie. no hospital admissions are necessary.  However, if you require accommodation / lodging, airport transfer we are happy to help you arrange. There is a budget motel (A & N Motel), a 4- star hotel (Hotel Royal Bintang Damansara) and a 5-star hotel (One World Hotel) nearby.  In addition, we also have some home-stay accommodation with facilities available.

There is also long stay apartments at the cost of RM1,200 (approx. US$350) per week.

 4.   The cost of treatment is as follows :-

Initial consultation (scans, semen analysis, blood tests)  -  RM 600 – RM 800 (approx. US$175 – US$235)

IVF (incl of drugs, lab charges, procedures)              -  RM18000 – RM20,000 per cycle (approx. US$5,240 – US$5,820)

IVF & PGS (incl of drugs, lab charges, procedures)   -  RM 24,000 – RM26,000 per cycle (approx. US$6,980 – US$7,565)

 5.   The pregnancy rate per cycle are as follows :-

 IVF                   53%

ICSI                  42%

IVF & PGD        45%

We prefer if you can have the entire treatment with us to ensure consistency and high success rates, but if you wish, you can have part of the treatment with your own fertility specialist and come back to us for egg collection and transfer.

We look forward to be of assistance.

Hi I’m American living in Singapore. Today I went to the TMC clinic to meet with Dr. Fabian. I wanted to see the clinic and understand their proceedures.

Overall it went well really. I contracted a taxi company that has permission to drive in both Singapore and Malaysia. So the trip to Johor Bahru (JB) was super easy. It was 60 minutes door to door and i live on the east coast. So if you consider them, i would recommend staying in Singapore. JB is quite ugly and run down and really nothing there.

the clinic is inside an office building..that is pretty much vacant. its just past the Immigration check points. so its very easy to get to from Singapore.

The clinic itself is older and very spartan. But the staff are friendly and speak English. there are lots and lots of writes up on the clinic walls..all in Malaysian unfortunately…lots of baby picutres and thank you letters.

I met with the Doctor. he was really nice and spoke fluent English. He is trained in Banglore and UK. He took his time and answer all 30 of my questions. we spent about 45 minutes.
They do discuss in detail with you about embryo transfers. they also do mock transfers and prefer long protocol. they monitor you regularly. they do provide storage for embryos.

overall everything seems top level…its just not a posh office setting.

the clinic and lab are all in one location.

The cost is about $4500-6000US depending on the drugs you need and ICIS and assisted hatching.

they don’t do selective reductions but refer you out. they work with you to limit the # of embryos but at the same get the best rest.

Overall, after meeting the doctor I feel much better.
at the end they gave us a video about IVF/ICIS and the proceedure.

    very professional.

if we move forward with IVF it’ll be here.

If anyone is considering them, they are really slow to respond to email and you can’t speak with the doctor. it may be best to arrange for a phone consultation or email me and I”ll give you the contact information of the doctor

i also recommend you stay in Singapore and commute to JB for the appts.

can a 52-53 yr old conceive by ivf, what is the possibility. her period has stopped for abt 3-4 mths

  6. Comment by Momofone

    hi There,
I wanted to update and let everyone know that TMC’s embryologist has only been at that the JB location for 2 years and only has 2 years of experience.

  7. Comment by admin

Thanks for this information. Do you think this is good or bad? Sometimes when people are fairly new to their field they are more diligent. Then again they have not come across all of the problems that can occur and hence their lack of experience can mean that they miss things that a more experienced embryologist would not.

to admin, the #1 thing in evaluating a clinic is the embryologist. this has to do with experience and not enthusiam…go for good experiece

  10. Comment by admin

You’re right, I suppose I should be asking them what experience they have.

Best of luck with your treatment, I’m so pleased it’s going so well – love the updates.

I’m currently undergoing ICSI at TMC (Kota Damansara). Found out that the success rates in the last 2 months had increased to 61%. They’ve done a wonderful job and I’m in my 2WW period. Not too sure how TMC JB looks like but I’m really pleased with TMC Kota Damansara with its new full-fledged building, operating rooms, test centers, etc.

  12. Comment by admin

Thank you for the feedback JT, it’s great to hear about peoples personal experiences.

    Best of luck,

  14. Comment by Momofone

wanted to respond to JT, (at TMC in Kota)

i physically went to the TMC clinic in JB.
I have to say visually, not impressed…its a clean space but very old…very austere…they don’t even leave toilet paper in the bathroom. It has much more feel of being influenced by the muslim culture as opposed to the Chinese Culture like Victoria ARt.

I didn’t go with them and went with Victoria ART, literally down the street, because the embryologist at TMC JB only has 2 years of experience and is working alone..all research states and my doctors in Singapore said that the most important factor is the experience and skill of the embryologist.
A 2 year veteran with no senior supervisor concerns me…plus this site has not updated their states since 2006! thats a 3 year gap and plenty of time to get them out.

Victoria ART’s embryologist, Rachel, has over 10 years experience and she was actually working for TMC in Kuala lumpur and was a part of the all the “firsts” that TMC did there.

I have to say, working with her now for over a month, she is really fantastic. She runs the Victoria ART lab in JB.

I understand that other than IVF, there is another alternative, IUI. How is the success rate of IUI.

  16. Comment by Momofone

In general IUI is not much better than timed sex, its success rate is about 20%…its really only recommend if you have hostle vaginal fluid. but if you sperm problems or unexplained infertility new studies have come out showing its a waste of time and money to do IUI you are better of just to keep timing sex or move onto IVF

  25. Comment by Mind Movies

that is much cheaper than in America. Are the same procedures used?

  26. Comment by admin

    Dear Mind Movies,

As far as I am aware the procedures are exactly the same. Generally the difference in price is due to the difference in the cost of labour between countries.

    All the best,

  27. Comment by Karen Fisher

Just wanted to comment about the three IVF Centres at JB. The one at TMC and Victory are OK but I found the one at Johor Specialist Hospital (JSH), Jalan Abdul Samad the best. It is based at the Premier Hospital (JSH) and has all the necessary back up services at one location, including Urologist, operation theter and even delivery in one place.

I found the doctor there, Dr Mohan, to be very friendly and caring. The embrylogist there, Ms Angela Ho has more then 18 years experience. That’s more then any other embrylogists experiences in JB put together. In fact, she has her own free standing lab in Singapore, Manila and Jakarta. In fact, me being being treated at JSH fertlity Centre assures me Singapore and international standards but me paying in Malaysian rates! In fact, they are the only centre in JB that does their own pre implant genetic diagnosis (PGD) in house.

I would strongly recommend this Centre to any one who is considering IVF.

    Karen

  28. Comment by Momofone

    Hi Karen,
    I looked up JSH http://www.jsh.kpjhealth.com.my/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=157&Itemid=153

Can you tell me about their pricing…did you or are you currently using their services?
    do you live in Singapore?

i’m very happy with Victoria ART but curious about this place. please provide more info

    thanks

  29. Comment by Karen Fisher

This is in responce to Momofone’s qst. No, I do not live in Singapore. I had my IVF done at JSH Fertility Centre, Johor Specialist Hospital about one year ago and had just delivered a lovely set of twin boys. I did my pre implantation diagnosis there (to balance my family) as I already have two girls. I now live in London, UK.

It cost us around RM 19,000 for the IVF and an additional RM 8,000 for the PGD. The best thing about JSH Fertility Centre is that the staff there is very friendly. Further more, the embryologist there, Ms Angela Ho and the doctor, Dr Mohan are very experienced and caring.

    Thank you.

we have been married for 7years and have gone thru various treatments and finally been told that Ivf would be the only soloution. I am very able to do this in my country Sri Lanka, but the shariah rules cannot be 100%. I would wish to know if youll are a shariah compliant centre and if youll have only ladies on your team of doctors and tech.
I have been diagnosed with PCOS. iui is not possible for me the doctors say.I am 28years and my husband is 35years, could you please send me some details and the costs of such treatment in your TMC Fertility Centre

Thanking and awaiting an early response

  34. Comment by admin

    Dr. K.G.
I am so sorry to hear of the distress that your sister has had to go through. This is certainly a big issue with IVF – not only do you have all the normal distresses of possible problems that can occur with pregnancy, but you have higher emotional feelings as generally the amount of time and effort that has gone into trying to become pregnant is much higher than normal, and you also have the bills!
It is heart warming to hear a plea from a doctor to other doctors for the protection of our feelings as “customers” – I thank you for this.
My condolences go out to your sister and I hope that she is successful in the future and that life brings her the beautiful healthy baby that she longs for.
    All the best,
    Sue

  35. Comment by mummy

    Dr K.G.
I know it is a very tough time for your sister right now. My heart goes out for her and I pray that she will have the strength to go through this tough time.
I did IVF twice and both failed. That was 2 years back. The feeling was devastating when we lost it, both for me and my hubby. Mine didn’t go as far as 6 weeks.
We are considering to try it one more time, thinking of trying it in TMC. For those that has real life experience with TMC (or Damansara Specialist) in Kota Damansara/Damansara Uptown, appreciate if you could share it her.

Does anyone know how many cases has the embryologist performed? my friends & doctor told me to evaluate the embryologist not only by the number of years they have worked as an embryologist, but by the number of cases they have performed because you cannot say that a person who has worked as an embryologist for 15 years but with 40 cases a year is definitely better than one who has only worked for 4 years but have done 150 cases a year..any comments?

There are many various towns for any superb exotic vacation anywhere. I don’t realize so why, but it looks like i prefer generally that asian region with regard to the pleasure trip, since it looks like folks one can find so welcoming as well as great

  52. Comment by Jenny Tan

My sis is trying for IUI but she has PCOS. So is IUI out for her and she hv to straight away try IVF.

the amount ath karen quoted wasn’t cheap. In Singapore, IVF patient can use our funding from medisave to deduct. So they need not pay that much.

So i am wondering if she should still go and seek advice in JB hosp.

  55. Comment by hopebb

    Hi Jenny,

It is still possible to do that. I know you can use CPF to do IVF in Singapore but only the 3 goverment hospitals. If you are comparing the private hospital in Singapore and JB, I believe the later will offer cheaper.

  56. Comment by hopebb

Amendment from my earlier email (To Jenny)

I meant Government subsidy only payable to those patient receive the treatment in goverment hospitals. When you mentioned Medisave, it is still your money. In fact, if you leave the money in CPF, I heard it enjoy a better interest rate compared to normal bank saving account.

Does KL TMC offer any seminars or talk on fertility treatment? I know that TMC in JB does organize such things but wat about KL?

  63. Comment by Websurfer

I’ve been to the TMC clinic in JB clinic before, and done my homework. They’ve had 2 embryologists all along. Their chief embryologist was sent to Monash in Australia to do her Masters back in 2007. Apparently she graduated with 8 high distinctions and returned last year. The doctor mentioned that she’s been working with them since 2003 and has done some 4000 cases. I think she’s the reason for TMCs success. Victory on the other hand doesn’t have a dedicated fertility doctor. Also, the embryologist in Victory hardly does many cases. I was told that they only perform 3 or 4 IVF cases a month. I felt that the Victory embryologist was rather old school, and the TMC one was up to date. My IVF twins are quite big now. But they remind me of the right decision I made.

  64. Comment by Websurfer

I also previously enquired about the JSH Fertility centre. Same thing. They only do 3 or 4 cases a month. No in-house embryologist. Only a visiting one from Singapore. I asked about their published pregnancy rates. None were available from JSH or Victory. I never really had the confidence. I recently visited the new TMC centre in Kuala Lumpur (BTW the address above is wrong. They have moved to their new centre). Wow! it is really posh. It is a full fledged hospital. Very impressive. Almost like a 5 star hotel. They have car jockeys, a concierge, international patient service, etc. They’ve got a viewing gallery to show you their lab and equipment. But I guess all this would come at a price. A friend I recommended recently, told me that he had spent close to RM20,000 for his complete treatment there. Thankfully his wife is pregnant. He seems satisfied (and I’m relieved)

  65. Comment by Websurfer

Oh Ya! My friend told me that the doctor in TMC KL told him that they have now started this latest PGD method called microarray. They claim they are the only ones in Asia to do this. The older one that all other centres use is called FISH method. It seems that with FISH they can only check for a few chromosomes. That means there is no guarantee that the baby has no genetic disorder. But with microarray it is more accurate and they can check for all chromosomes. They can also check for thalassemia. But it costs an additional RM12,000. So RM 20,000 for IVF plus RM 12,000 for PGD is a staggering RM 32,000. Only for the rich.

  66. Comment by Ruby

I just had my ICSI & PGD done with TMC. Yes, it cost a minimal of RM12k for the PGD. And yes, it cost about RM20k, or slightly more than that, just expect RM22k. IVF is cheaper, I opted for IVF, but they had to do ICSI, only know after the egg retrieval. In Malaysia, there’s no money back guarantee, whereas in US & their branch in China have money back guarantee. It’s more expensive, but can do multiple IVF/ICSI which at the end is much cheaper, with money back guarantee too. But have to consider taking time off, air-ticket, accommodation, transportation, etc, these are money too. So, you got to weigh it yourself.

  67. Comment by Ruby

My series of injections at TMC took 37 days.

The common – egg retrieval 2 days later, embryo transferred 3 days after egg retrieved.

After spending RM34k & got the normal embryo transferred, I had my beta hCG done, it was negative, means not pregnant. Started the program 2 months before my 36th birthday. Had 27 eggs retrieved, 10 were too small, 4 were bad, 4 broken when ICSI was done, left 9 eggs. Of that 9 eggs, 6 fertilised but 1 died, left 5 embryos. Of these 5 embryos, 4 were abnormal (triple-13, triple-21, triple-X, XO), left 1 that was normal, implanted on day 3.

I was worry that I may not get pregnant ’cause I read that you would’ve a lower success rate if you implant on day 3 (the embryo was 6 cells) instead of day 5 (blastocyst), but doc said I had only 1 embryo, so it’s risky to wait till day 5. He wasn’t sure the embryo was a weak/strong normal embryo, but said if it’s a weak embryo, it can survive better in uterus than in the lab. The normal embryo is graded Fairly Good (Good, Fairly Good, Fair, Poor). I was also worry that the ICSI & PGD done on the embryo further lower the quality/strength of the normal embryo. Not only that, I was having a single embryo transfer, which I read have a lower success rate too.

I asked the doc if he could pinpoint where went wrong, he couldn’t, ’cause my uterus lining was good, blood test was good, & the embryo was a normal embryo. So, he said maybe I had poor quality eggs to start with, thus the normal embryo could be a weak embryo even it was a Fairly Good embryo under the microscope. I’m not sure if he got updated like the comment by Websurfer here (6 Jun’10) about TMC using the latest PGD method called Micro Array, ’cause the doc told me the PGD didn’t even test all the abnormal chromosomes. I can only guess he didn’t get updated ’cause he told me the PGD was RM7k, I paid RM12k. But I looked at their website, didn’t see anywhere mentioned that Micro Array but the FISH, guess it’s not updated.

Will try again for 1 last time by end of the year.

Gosh, I read it here (http://www.ivf.net/ivf/index.php?page=out&id=323&print=yes) which says about the Micro Array, “the technique is only effective if carried out on embryos grown for between five to six days in the laboratory. Currently, most PGD tests are done a single cell taken from a three-day old embryos, which are made up of just eight cells.” They did my PGD on day 3, I hope it didn’t mean that they were using the old FISH method but charging me on the new price for Micro Array. I hope it means the price for the old FISH method is increased.

Also, it says, “the method was not reliable when carried out on one cell taken from an eight cell stage”. My embryo was only 6 cells on day 3 when the PGD was performed, so I guess TMC wasl using the old FISH method. I would need to call the doc tomorrow to verify. If they’ve the Micro Array, why not wait till day 5 to perform the PGD. Probably the so-called normal embryo which they transferred to my womb wasn’t at all that normal. I would rather not having it transfer if it was also abnormal so save myself not only the money, but also the 2 weeks’ procedure that I had to go through after the embryo transferred.

I sent an email to the embryologist at TMC, they’re using PGD MicroArray, but the price is determined by the doctor. Didn’t bring up my case yet.

I sent another email to her asking if MicroArray can be done on day 3 embryo & on embryo with 6 cells only. I would probably get the reply by today / next Mon.

ruby, i am going to tmc coming august. planning to see Dr. Colin. after reading your post.. i am very very worry.

Can’t wait for her to reply, called her. MicroArray can be done on day 3 embryos & for 6 cells & above. So, it means they should’ve checked my normal embryo for all the abnormal chromosomes instead of some. So, what the doc said that my normal embryo wasn’t checked for all abnormal chromosomes, which could be another reason why the embryo didn’t implant doesn’t really apply, ’cause he was thinking they were still using the old method & told me it was RM7k.

Anyway, did my research, at my age, with so many bad eggs, & the normal one only had 6 cells, that can foretell that it was likely I won’t get pregnant.

Ruby: sorry to heard the news. But don’t give up!

    Hi Ruby,
I am the embryologist from TMC who just happen to drop by; hopefully I will be able to answer some of your queries (if we did not before).
Just for the records, PGD cost RM 12,000 and it has been this price since 2009.

Microarray-CGH is still very new in the world. While TMC fertility centre is the first in Asia to use CGH, this is currently only used in selected cases, and it has not been used in your case. The costing for CGH, has not been finalized, as it is obviously more expensive than using a 5 probes FISH-PGD.

And a little bit on the technical part, PGD on day 3 embryo is the standard practice from around the world, some centres however uses FISH on blastocyst (day 5/6). At TMC, we do PGD at either day 3 and also at the blastocyst stage, so as to maximize the chances of the patient having an embryo for transfer. In your case we did both day 3 and day 6 PGD-FISH, unfortunately none of the embryos tested on day 6 are normal. So we did not transfer any embryo on day 6.
