IVF Cost at Sunfert International Fertility Centre, Malaysia

After a reader of this blog reported her successful IVF from Sunfert International Fertility Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, I thought I’d better drop them a line.

The website for Sunfert is www.sunfert.com and their contact details are:

Level 2 (East Wing),
Sunway Medical Centre,
No. 5, Jalan Lagoon Selatan,
Bandar Sunway,
46150 Petaling Jaya,
Selangor, Malaysia.
Telephone: +6 03 7491 6555
+6 03 7491 6556
Fax:             +6 03 7491 6557

The responses they gave to my IVF Cost Letter were:

1. What is the current success rate for your clinic? (preferably by age as I know that the success rate will be much lower for somebody of my age)

Sunfert’s current success rate is 55%.
Age less than 30 years: 60%
Age 30 – 33 years: 50%
Age 34 – 37 years: 69%
Age 38 – 40 years: 57%
Age more than 40 years: 38%

2. How many cycles do you perform per year at the clinic?
We think that we could perform 200 cycles this year.

3. What is the maximum age that you treat?
We don’t eliminate ages. The oldest that we have treated is 43years (own
eggs) and 57 years (donor eggs).

4. Are there any fertility conditions that you will not treat?
Surrogacy (however, discussions with the fertility doctor is advisable
first).
5. What is your embryo transfer policy? How many embryos will you replace at one time?
Less than 38 years, 3 embryos. More depends on condition, quality of
embryos, patient’s fertility treatment history.

6. What is the basic cost of the IVF treatment?
Package price is RM14,900 nett (terms and conditions apply).

7. What additional costs would / could be incurred?
First consultation with doctor, preliminary fertility investigations,
initial semen analysis and other investigations.

8. What happens to the costs if the cycle has to be abandoned?
A refund can be obtained (depending on which stage the cycle was abandoned).

9. How long would I need to be in Malaysia for?
If you have a fertility doctor at your own country that can monitor your
cycle initially, then you would have to be in Malaysia about 1 week (final
follicular scan, egg retrieval and embryo transfer).

10. Who deals with the logistics of flights and accommodation?
We can assist the foreign patients in booking of accommodation.

11. How is the pre-treatment carried out?
Please elaborate.

12. How do I get medication?
If you are a foreigner, we will give you a prescription or a letter for
you to bring along the drugs back home during your first visit with the
fertility doctor (preliminary investigation). But if you are a local, we
can dispense the drugs to you straight from our pharmacy.

13. How will I be monitored?
If you are a foreigner, we will work hand in hand with your local doctor.
If you are malaysia, monitoring will be done by our fertility doctor’s
clinic which is two doors away from the centre (literally).

14. How will I know that I am not being under / over stimulated?
The doctor will advise you during follicular scan sessions.

15. If I have a problem whilst in the UK who would I go to?
You can discuss this with our fertility doctor. He can suggest some contacts.

16. Is the clinic registered with any regulatory body?
We are registered with Malaysian Ministry of Health.

Thank you
May

why are you considering this place instead of TMC? just curious as I haven’t seen this place but have seen TMC in JB

Sunway Fertility is run by Dr Wong who used to be one of the top doctors at TMC in KL. He left to set up this unit about a year ago.

I have posted on the TMC board before and can say that I did many cycles at TMC – I don’t know anyone who is happy with their long waiting times – about 5 hours per appointment, being from the UK myself there is no way I would entertain it again having found several fertility clinics in Malaysia who far outweigh in success and benefits of TMC.

Dr Wong had very good success rates when he was working at TMC but all in all I feel it is the skill of the embryologist which is more important. I know that the best embryologists in Malaysia are at Victory ART in JB and Prince Court in KL, both of whom employ PHD holders in embryology. I think Dr Prashant at KL Fertility also has very good success rates and initially set up the unit at Prince Court prior to him opening his own fertility clinic in KL.

I also think its very important to note the costs as being quoted as NET. As IVF drugs can cost around 5,000 RM per cycle and ICSI around 2,000 and PGD around 10,000 this can add one heck of a cost to the IVF procedure. I’d love to see clinics quoting an all in price or at least including absolutely everything except medication which can differ in price.

Just an update from Sunfert. We are incorporating a holistic treatment programme called MindBody Fertility into our IVF/ICSI treatment cycle. Plus, it is FREE! It is our goal and objective to provide you with a more rounded (holistic) fertility care.

Not only that, Sunfert also has good follow-up antenatal care (Dr. Wong Pak Seng is a resident OBGYN and fertility specialist practicing in Sunway Medical Centre) because we are situated inside an established medical centre (Sunway Medical Centre). The medical centre has excellent NICU team and facilities.

If you need further information on the new holistic well-being treatment programme, please do not hesitate to drop me an email at info@sunfert.com.

    Thank you

Hello May. I just registered at sunfert to do my ICSI because my husband semen analysis shows severe oligoasthenoteratozoospermia. You guys were confident in we doing the ICSI. But deep down we are worried. Really really worried. One thing is because we are waiting for the second child since 2009. Another thing is what if the sperm condition is so bad until the attempt fails at the injection into ova stage? The cost of redoing it. I just go to know Dr Wong is from TMC. Very happy to hear that. Will the genetic and DNA will be altered if the sperm has poor morphology? Thank you

My wife and i planning to go for IVF in Malysia. have no clue about the clinics, their success rate and cost. Please advise

    Hi Assen,

I have information on three clinics in Malaysia, they can be seen at http://www.ivfcost.net/tag/malaysia, click on the clinic heading and it will give you all the details for that clinic.

It is certainly worth reading the comments that have been posted on each of the clinics as these are generally from people who have attended the clinic, and so are about first hand experiences.

We wish you and your wife all the best with your journey, and please do let us know how you get on.

Recently I went to sunfert and had negative impression on sunfert of the following reasons:-
    1. I was not informed the centre was moved to Bangsar already. I’m not only have to pay for the car park at Sunway medical centre, but also the receptionist attitude at Sunway medical centre was unacceptable – sunfert has moved more than 5 months and they still asked me to wait there! Luckily I made a phone all to the nurse and she advised me of the correct address, which I should be informed at the time of the appointment made!
    2. My appointment time is 8am and when I rushed to bangsar south, I was informed the doctor is not here yet?? I asked if so why made my appointment at such time and the answer was there were too busy already and and just have to shuff people in. What does that help with the situation? I woke up so early just to sit there and wait for the doctor for 1 to 2 hours then what’s the point of making appointment at such and such time? “Time” is not being respected here.
    3. After seeing the doctor the nurse just have to give me the schedule and the pill and the invoice to pay. Im not understand why it takes them sooooooooooo bloody long. It’s almost 12 noon and I’m still waiting!!!!!!! Can everyone imagine if one has to get up 7am in the morning, go to the wrong medical centre at 8am, rush to the correct centre at 8:30m and spent most of the time waiting, waiting and waiting until 12 noon????? There’s no effective service here. I don’t think this waiting and frustration contribute to success rate of my ivf. In overall I feel deep disappointment with the service and system of this centre. It’s so called “international fertility centre” but only doctor standard and renovation reached international standard, the nurse attitude, service effectiveness and overall system is miles from so called “international” compare to countries like Australia.

This is 3rd visit to Sunfert and feel extremely disappointed with thier long waiting time. They schedule 12pm for my appointment and ask to come 15min early. I was sitting here for 3.5hours yet my turn still unknown. First time I walked away after waited for 3.5hours, second time was 1.5 hours as I schedule as early as 7.30am. This time is the follow up checkup but I already lost my patient and anger for waiting bloody long hours. No body willing to wait for damn long hours if they have a choice. Sunfert will definitely my last visit after this and will not return for thier bad schedule arrangement.
