Had Success with IVF but at a high price?

I have had a request from a magazine for help in finding somebody to do an article. Here are the details:

Has anyone spent £100,000 or there abouts on fertility treatment to have a baby? I am a health journalist looking for a couple who have spent a lot of money on fertility treatment and have been successful in having a baby. The article is for Fabulous – the News of the World glossy magazine – and it would involve an interview and having pictures taken. In return you will be paid. Don’t be Misled by a Clinics IVF Success Rate

It is very easy to look at the published success rate for a particular clinic and believe that you can use this to compare how good the clinic is compared to any other. This is definitely not the case – as I’ve found. When I wrote my letter to clinics for more information on their IVF treatment I specifically posed the questions:

What is the maximum age that you treat?

Are there any fertility conditions that you will not treat?

because if the clinic restrict their treatment to relatively easy cases – younger women without complicated infertility issues – then their success rate is bound to be higher.

I have just read an article about the claimed success rates in Queensland, Australia, and find that even with these questions answered I stand little chance of getting a comparable success rate, or even a rate that means anything at all! Over 40′s Now Twice as Likely to have a Successful IVF Pregnancy – Hooray!

In the last two years us over 40′s have now double the chance of a successful IVF pregnancy than we had previously – I’ll give a big cheer for that!

This has been achieved through advancements in IVF technology, including better media for culturing embryos and the trend in transferring embryos at the blastocyst stage, five or six days after fertilisation.

They now claim that the over 40′s (that’s me!!) now has a realistic chance of a successful IVF pregnancy. Check out the full article here.

IVF success could be improved by new technology to select the healthiest embryos

We may only be 5 years away from dramatically increasing the success rate of IVF treatment – although at the moment only mice are benefiting!

A team of scientists from Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a microfluidic chip that can measure the health of an embryo by determining the nutrients that they take in.

The process is still in the early stages, and there is still some controversy as to whether it can be effective in increasing the IVF success rate. If it is it may be too late for me, but it will be a great move for the younger women – anything that can reduce the number of IVF cycles, and hence the stress and cost, will be loved by us all!
